Beginning with all of its 2006 models, Chrysler will be advising its U.S. customers to replace their tires on new cars and trucks every six years, regardless of tire wear. The advise is common practice for the company's European brands, but dispute between the U.S. automakers and the domestic tire industry on research regarding tire aging have until now left the advice (read: warning) on the cutting room floor. The warning states that failure to follow this advice can result in sudden tire failure causing serious injury or death. So can a rusty nail. All of this was brought on because of new research that suggests tires can degrade rapidly as they get older, regardless of how much they've been used. We don't know about you, but the only people we know who don't need to replace their tires after six years are Grandmas who only drive their Tempos to church and back on Sunday.
