F1 car for the road
Does there seem to be a huge amount of coachbuilders lately putting together hand built cars that most of us will never see in person, no less be able to afford? We're not complaining because these little guys are always pushing the styling and performance limits that many mass-production automakers won't and can't touch. The New Zealand built Hulme.F1 supercar plops a BMW M5 engine mid-ships and molds a carbon fiber body around it. Ultra light weight (2643 lbs) and 450 horsepower along with F1 inspired looks could make this quite a road burner.

Would 26xx lbs be ULTRA lightweight? I'd reserve ultra for the sub-2000lb cars. Granted even the supercars now are 3000lbs - the Enzo and Carrera GT are 32xx each.

Whoa, looks sexier than an Enzo, IMHO of course.

Yeah! Using arrows' color is always a winner.

Methinks the new BMW M5 V-10 would be a better match to an F1 inspired car. Not to mention 50 more horses.

Is it me, or does this thing look a little like an aardvark?

2600lbs? My Miata weighs 2450, and it's the heaviest Miata ever made (until the NC is released).
How did they manage to make this thing so heavy? It looks smaller than an Elise, and with this layout I would expect it to be lighter, too.

I remember seeing the original concept sketches of this car and thinking "wow, this wont make it to reality..." but dang, its really quite hot. Isnt this what Ferrari was really going for with the Enzo? Schumie, eat your heart out.

Based on these dimensions, it's a very big car. Apart from height, it's bigger than the Vette so the weight seems reasonable.

An F1 car for the road? Not with that weight it isn't. The closest I've ever seen to a F1 car (or at least an open wheel racer) on the road is the Arial Atom 2 (http://www.arielmotor.co.uk/04/frames.htm)
A mid-mounted supercharged Honda 2 litre engine giving 300bhp and it doesn't have a roof, doors, windows, windscreen or even much in the way of a body. Cut slick tyres, adjustable suspension and, oh yes, 456 kilos (1003 lbs). 0-60 in somewhere around the 3 second mark for about 30,000 (around $57,000).
Video clip of it in action here: http://www.openwheelers.com.au/videos/Top_Gear_Ariel_Atom_2_Full_segment.mpg but it's 48Mb. It's been featured on Autoblog before (http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000890030109/) but that was the 160bhp entry level model.
