Prepare to be horrified. We rarely completely trash vehicles. But there is always an exception to that rule. The Jeep
Commander has to be one of the most unappealing vehicles, as far as appearance, we've seen in this site's ten months of
existence. In recent times, only the Pontiac Aztec has been uglier.
On the plus side, at least the Commander looks like it delivers a really nice seven-seat SUV for Jeep. Inside the seats and dash look terrific. Jeep has given the Commander two V-8 engine choices, but will anyone opt away from the 5.7 L Hemi for the 4.7 L SOHC V-8? There will also be a 3.7 L V-6. I’m sorry DCX, this is the first misstep you’ve made since the 300. While not everyone likes the 300/Magnum/Charger the people aligned with this monstrosity won’t be split 50/50. We’ll just post the rest of the pictures and let everyone dig in.
What’s with all the air vents?
Did we mention the three sunroofs?

Nine out of ten blind potential drivers surveyed didn't seem to be upset with this new Jeep.
In other news, automotive experts are trying to find this vehicle's best side. Rumors have it that it doesn't look too bad upside down.
Late breaking news. A Florida judge has ordered the feeding tube for this monstrosity to be removed.
Latest breaking news. Finally something that looks worse than the only daughter of a recent impeached President.

In a word: Ick. Reminds of an updated Cherokee knockoff as seen through the eyes of a marginal Korean design school. And about that wrap-around roofrack. Anyone home? Especially from dead-on, it's hatefully ugly.
At least the seat leather looks nice, right?
For what it's worth, I wasn't exactly convinced of the aesthetic merits of the new Grand Cherokee. I'm now absolutely positive that someone's spiked the watercooler in the design department. Let's hope it drives far better than it looks.
Shameless plug: Consider this to be more grist for my "Square To Be Hip" editorial mill: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/content/110808111486390945/

How does a company responsible for such phenomenal designs as the Charger, 300c, Magnum, Ram, crossfire, viper, etc get a simple Suv so wrong? I thought fake looking riveted fender flares was only a GM thing... even they don't use it anymore...
Phil @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
actually ive shown this to a couple friends, and most if not all are more impressed with this then the new cherokee. in black im sure this would look better

What was the most common response for a survey taken for the new name of this jeep?
The survey says!!
#1: Oh my god!!! (458 people)
#2: Holy Shit!!! (8 people)
#3: What's a jeep. (George Bush)

That honor goes to Madam secretary...

OK...Since I rarely agree with anything here...I'll bite.
It's not bad. And it is definitely Jeep. Part of me died when the Cherokee went away and we were left with the bloated Liberty (the dying part is a slight overstatement), but this is another one of those automobiles that pictures don't do any justice.
I reserve my final judgement after seeing it in person, but I think it has promise.
Sheniferous @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
#10. Yea? Well, part of me died when I saw these pics of the Commander. ;)

I actually like it. It looks like a Wagoneer. No bs, no bling - just a Jeep. The interior is really nice too.
I am not kidding. I would buy this thing. However, I tend to like angular slabby designs generally. Your milage may vary.

the funny thing is I like to think we paint with pretty borad strokes. We don't hate everything. Far from it. We try and find the good in every car. That's why this vehicle is so different. It is easy not to like. Even the two ugly Scions seem to have more personality
Renegade OTV @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
What's so wrong with it? And why does jeep need three models of suv's? is this the super exensive high end model?
KIVERS @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
All joking aside, it just looks like someone took a Grand Cherokee and made it longer without extending the wheelbase. It just looks odd with such a huge rear overhang, looks like it might fall off if I hit a bump too hard. The droopy looking front end doesn't help at all, and it's boxiness just makes it all worse.
I think the new Grand Cherokee is nice, the update to the liberty is really nice, but this just ruins the whole thing.
starlightmica @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
It's morning in America again - 1984. AMC is still an independent company, recently having introduced the Renault Alliance, and here is their brand new, class defining Jeep Cherokee 4 door.
Oh, wait a moment - how did I get here without the DeLorean?
What are those metal on black bars framing the rear glass for?
GTi-VR6 @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
this is a joke right? come on....you can tell us....
tbyron @ Dec 18th 2005 10:59PM
The interior looks great. The engineering is probably rock solid. They will depreciate SOOOO fast though b/c DCX will do a lousy job of forecasting demand...these will make GREAT used car buys in a couple of years.
