The Journal's Joseph B. White says demand for truck-based SUVs is down 18 percent, while car-based SUV/crossovers is up 12 percent as gas prices start to soar. Of course they also point to successful high-powered, high-consumption cars like the Mustang and Hemi-filled Chrysler products. There is also a rise in value of small cars, but that can be attributed to more upscale small cars entering the market like the Mini.
