The Sultans of Stuttgart have pulled the wraps off their newest product: the Cayman S. Basically, it's a 295hp hardtop Boxster-based roadster with a more 911-ish front end and a rear hatch. Expect the Cayman's price to fall between the Boxster S and the 911.

Why is everyone so sure its 60K? CarAndDriver is reporting that this car will go against the 350 and rx8...those are 30K cars...

I'm with Eion on this. To me, the real question is why spend 70k for a base 911?

A "more 911-ish front end" you say. With the exception of '05, they have been the exact same. How can it be more of something it is exactly like? I'm afraid Porsche is blurring the lines even further with this car.

Fantastic new car! Good thing Porsche cars move faster than their slow loading website. Loose the Flash crap. Nobody wants to look at a reptile's eye for 20 seconds. What's wrong with a simple JPG picture of the new car? Get a new ad agency, and fire your web designers.

The Casino was just an ad-page. I got it too. There was a "skip" link at the top-righthand corner. It's similar to IGN's ads, which seem to only show on sometimes (i.e. random).

looks like a neat 911 two seater. We also got it on our german auto blog site ;-) http://www.dasautoblog.com/2005/02/porsche_cayman_.html

is it possible that the cayman "s" is priced between the boxster s and 911, but a regular cayman (no "s") will be priced below a boxer? kinda wish they'd bring a true "poor-man's porsche" to the market instead of this, like an updated 914. something that had a bit of porsche performance, but didn't break the bank. i guess we'll just have to rely on chery and malcom (http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000687031088/) for vehicles like that.

The 986's sucess is because it gives a taste of the 911 performance at a price just at the fingertips of most people. The Cayman (Model No?) will satisfy those 986-ers that want more GT appearance and performance. Porsche knows, there will be even an greater profit margin on this model. Ill bet most Cayman owners will be previous 986-ers. My latest question is: With the coupe, how do you access the engine topside? You cant have all the maintenance in the 'trunk'; or can you?

First, I agree with most of you with your posts: 1. The Cayman is a joke when you consider value vs. price, as well as positioning. Who the hell wants to pay that much for a glorified Boxster. In addition, by releasing this 'new car' that is looking suspiciously too much like the much better Carrera, aren't they in fact cannibalizing sales of the 911? Ridiculous. I guess That's Why it's called a CAYMAN. 2. Stupid ass name. Most Americans don;t even know it's a reptile. All they will think about is the CAYMAN Islands... destination for laundering illicit funds and money! Stupid stupid stupid. 3. Website/flash page. I am a little too intelligent for this childish charade. Give me a break. Horrible. I do corporate advertising and if I presented that to a client I'd be fired. What did the agency charge for that crap. Laughable. Not even close to being creative. And no photos of the car? 4. I had a Cayenne S. Great Performance. HORRIBLE, otherwise. It was in for warranty work (11) times (!) in the first 10 months alone. Itb sucked. I dumped it last August. Got a Mercedes E320 instead. No problems. 5. I still have my '97 C4S. Old school air cooled. Love it. I'll keep it. Why doesn't Porsche stick to what they do best? I am not liking the direction... neither do my friends "on the inside" in Switzerland.

Personally think it looks very nice and is bound to be a superb drive - no question. As for price - living in the UK - the car is expected to sell FROM 50k - nearly $100k so I wouldn't moan too much.....

Sorry again for the confusion, it's the www.gadgetryblog.com link in post #6 where I hit the ad page, and I didn't see the skip thing.
