Chevrolet/Daewoo Matiz
Daewoo, now branded as Chevrolet in Europe, will unveil the second generation of their small city car, the Matiz at Geneva next month. The tiny car is powered by either a 0.8 (did I just type 0.8?) 52 hp three-cylinder or a 1.0 liter four-cylinder 66 hp gasoline engine. The new Matiz gets better fuel mileage than its predecessor thanks to a slipperier shape. There's a rear three-quarter picture at the link if you care. Eeek.

Why don't we ever get the good European cars here in the states?

why don't you post the fuel economy numbers instead of just mocking the small engine size?

Because I hate metric conversions. And I'm not mocking the size, just not used to car engines under a liter in size. That's more like a cc kind of measurement.
1.37 gallons of gas offers up 62 miles.

GM also has an assortment of Daewoos branded as Chevrolet in Canada too. Seems like a great way to destroy one of the greatest "brands" in motoring. But GM invented all sorts of brands up here when you guys had Geo. We got "Passport" and the made-up "Asuna" brand that only lasted a year or two, so I guess it could be worse.

Looks like this car is coming to Canada in 06. I work at a GM dealer and the labor time guides for repairs are already out. It will be a Pontiac Matiz and the Chevrolet Spark.

Finally we are going to get some economical small and
(I hope)- relatively inexpensive cars in Canada! I definitely would buy
one to do my everyday 100 km driving and pay $1 for gas instead of today's $5
with a big car.
The American producers are wondering why they loose market to the
Japanese and Korean manufacturers. The main reason is - they are much more
economical and Korean - much cheaper.
Lots of young people can not afford and lots of people dont want to pay even $15-$16 000 cars and no one company in North America (opposite to European market) today offers a really cheap car around $6- $8 000 dollars - the city car which you use to drive to work. You don't need a 150-300 HP to stay on the city intersections.
With today's (and especially - tomorrow's) gasoline prices demand on
small economical and cheap cars will increase drastically. And the
company who will offer such cars first will benefit a lot.

@Brocktoon, you said that it is a good way to destroy a brand. Maybe, for you. But you do not Daewoo and the GM people do. I also know a little about it because a I have a Daewoo Kalos (branded as Chevrolet Kalos and known in America as Chevrolet Aveo). In the price range of this car, Aveo, you can not find anything better in Europe. That just the thing. So, i can't wait for this Spark to be sold here.

What most folks in places like Europe "don't get" is a 1000 mile drive can be a daily thing in North America. I would think nothing about getting in my car and driving to my daughter's place 1200 miles distant in one sitting. You are not going to do this in a small economy car, through ice, snow, and salt.
Oh! you can do it, but the toll is high on both the driver and the car.
And really, in these days of energy effeciency, would it not be better to make cars that are rebuildable, rather than these "bic lighters", from parts unknown.
Try dealing with the parts chase for the last crop of orphans left here in Canada from Korea (Daewoo). I'm on a parts search for a Daewoo (body parts) and they simply do not exist in Canada, nice!
