Last month Boyd Coddington's shop was raided by State of California agents. Are they looking to shut down the hot rodders? No, more like shutting down an illegal tax avoidance scam. It seems that some people are faking titles of kit car Cobras and other kits and misrepresenting them as real to exempt them from smog laws, registration fees and California sales tax. Cali wants their money.

I hadn't been able to watch the shows for a while. Can anyone explain a bit more about the Mike situation?

They havent shown in the uk the mike incident but looking forward to seeing another nail in the boydsters coffin. i love it when boyd says "we" will have to work weekends/late nights. Nothing worse than a hands off boss who refers to your work as his. Also dont get me started on old dwayne dibley id like to beat him like a ginger step kid.

I used to love watching American Hotrod until the day that Charlie left... Now I won't even entertain watching it anymore, Charlie was in my opinion is how a boss/foreman should be... He cared alot about the people who worked for him... Good luck Charlie for the future... Andy...

Well, AHR is a show I love to hate. The latest show I noticed Al was back and Mike got canned for making rims for Foose. Good for him, Boyd is a f***stick. They should also leave the chopper building to OCC or Jesse James. Paul Senior might yell but at least we know that he can build a bike. I am not sure if Boyd could, he messed up drilling a hole for the stearing column on one of the shows. Certainly wouldn't want him doing much more than double checking the tightness of screws. As for Foose, he is a builder and an artist. Watching him draw a car is amazing, the color, detail is just beautiful. Hopefully Charlie is learning even more about how to paint a car,(he was doing a great job, don't get me wrong!!) because the learning at Boyd's was done long ago if at all, in the end it was just survival. I know I always enjoy learning new techniques and styles and I can only imagine that Charlie does too. Just my $.02, Dave

Boyd Cottington is a butthead, a talented butthead, but a butthead nonetheless. As for Duane I've worked for idiots like that and you spend your whole day wanting to beat them with a piece of pipe, screaming like a friggin' banshee all day like that. Charlie absolutely did the right thing in leaving . Boyd was choked that he went to the competition, especially Foose, but who else would a painter of Charlie's calibre work for but the major competition. Bluebear is basically a good kid that had to learn the hard way that he's not indispensible. Mike on the other hand I'm surprised he'd pull a stunt like that and deserved to get canned, but he's good at what he does and won't have a problem getting another job, albeit under a watchful eye I presume.

I agree with all other's general comments regarding both Boyd and Duane. They're both jerks. As a future hot rod project wannabe, I've watched American Hotrod with interest from the start. Now, it's too frustrating to see little Hitler Boyd and his skinhead side-kick Duane. That's it for me. I'd rather watch Laverne and Shirley re-runs than American Slop Job.

I Think American Hot Rod is CLASS those who do not like, [watch BARNEY ] Keep up the good work Boyd.

I find Boyd doesn't seem to pay attention to his people, he's always overextending them on jobs and wondering why they are losing morale by the flatbed load. Yes, you need target finish dates. If you are a good manager, you will meet those dates without a lot of overtime. Duane is an ass. It's his job to be one. If he didn't crack the whip, many on the shop floor would play with their dogs or not even be there. Duane should take Boyd aside and tell him what's going on with the rediculous make or break schedules. What about all the other rides there? i almost never see anyone working on them. I agree that Roy should run the shop floor. He might be semi retired, but despite his comic grouchyness, he has a LOT more people skills and actually listens to what is really going on. Despite the verbal fireworks on American Chopper, I see that as a much better place to work and more honest work being done. Sure, they mostly just tweak tanks, fenders and accessories, but they do really artistic creations. I am NOT a motorcycle fan, but I like watching that show. Whenever I watch Boyd's group, it's like watching slow motion footage of a bomb going off. You can see everything disintegrating, you can see everything going wrong and yet nobody there seems to care. Put Paul Teutle Senior in charge of Boyd and the shop, the crew will work, have fun and know that duane is actually doing what he should instead of cracking Boyd's whip.

After watching American Hot Rod, I know some of it is staged for ratings. Having redone a classic myself I know what is true. I'm in agreement about Duane. He has no PEOPLE SKILLS. Boyd is no better. If they were in a different business they would have been fired a long time ago and had charges against them. As far as Charlie moving on I feel it was the best thing he could have done. Boyd will never build anything to even enter that class of show.

Hi. I am English living in Coventry UK. I watch American Hotrod with interest. While I have no experience of what a true "rod" should be like I do like watching the show. I have been somewhat bemused by some of the er "man mangement" policies shown by both Boyd and Duane, is that how its done in the US? If that happened here they wouldnt be in business long. People like to do business with people they can trust, after seeing how some of the cars are put together with, as we call it 'filler' and you call it 'bondo' who could trust that company. My grandfather was a panel beater for Daimler in Coventry during the 1930's, bondo was never heard of in those days and he knew how to work metal by eye to get a smooth perfect finish. It's a shame those skills have been lost to speed of completion and the power of the higher margin. Thanx for letting me air my views. Phill Vincent-Betts Coventry England

The more I see of American Hot Rod the more evident it becomes that the two biggest problems in Boyd Coddington's shop are Duane and Boyd! Duane is a big mouth backstabber with a negative attitude. He constantly bad mouths everyone in the shop, nobody is as smart or hardworking as he,(in his opinion) he always has a smart a-- comment at the ready, and he runs to Boyd like a little girl to tattle tale on the guys. In the show about the 59 Chevy/bike project when he heard a rumor that Mike was working on the side for Chip Foose he had to call Boyd long distance to FINK on him. If Duane was half the big man he thinks he is he would have gone to Mike, asked him what was going on, and given him the benefit of the doubt before running to Boyd. After all, if his work for Coddington isn't affected it IS HIS FREE TIME. Boyd is so wrapped up in his opinion of himself that he's lost sight of the fact that no matter how many cars he has modified or built there are still people who have ideas as good as or better than his. Boyd's style of management (blow your top, ridicule, cuss, and accuse) is so poor it doesn't rate the name "Management Style". If none of his other methods work, he tries to make his employees feel guilty by whining about their lack of enthusiasim or loyalty to him. These guys give up their week ends and family time trying to meet his demands and it still isn't enough. His hatred for Chip Foose is something he needs to work out on his own. Everyone has competitors. I'm sure there is a lot of scripting done for the show but come on! It's time for a new act cause this one's getting old. A new twist would be to send Boyd and Duane to school and teach them how to manage people. Just because you are the boss or his #1 flunkie doesn't mean you have some secret gift for management. I've often wondered if Boyd agreed to make the show because he needs the money. After 25+ years he should be on easy street letting his reputation speak for him not slamming away at crazy production schedules and abusing his employees. If the Discovery Channel wants a good reality show they should check out some local race tracks and find a week end racer who puts his own money into a stock car with little or no sponsorship. These guys work a regular job during the day, prep the race car at night and race it on the week end. If the car gets torn up bad, they bust their buts all week to be ready to race the following week. I helped a guy who took down a light pole on a Saturday night and and tore up his car something awful. Starting on Sunday we stripped off the wrecked body, pulled the engine, cut the front clip off, welded a new one on, reinstalled the engine including building new mounts etc, fit the new body and had the car at the racetrack the next Saturday ready to race. Talk about deadline pressure! The paint was still a little wet but we made it. All of this was done by me and two other guys in the evening after work. This is free labor, we don't get any wages, but we also don't get cussed out. We hear "Thanks till you're better paid." Enough from me. Good luck to Charlie, Mike, Bluebear and any others abused by Boyd and Duane.
