More and more manufacturers are removing spare tires as a way to save space and weight (the new 3-series forgoes the spare for a "patch kit"). Current run flats, like those used on the 97-04 base Corvettes, used hard sidewalls to keep the tire round. Those tires also hurt the maneuverability of the car during turning. Michelin's newest technology doesn't depend on rigid sidewalls instead uses a plastic inner-wheel to support a flat.
